Calling the Moon

About the Book

For Penny, it comes during a school field trip. For Callie, it comes during a camping trip with her dad. And to Layla’s disappointment, hers comes right at the start of Ramadan. Whether they’re well prepared or totally in the dark, whether there’s a celebration about its arrival or a silence, the young people in these sixteen stories find that getting a period not only brings change to their bodies; it also brings joy, sorrow, and self-discovery.

Calling the Moon is an essential and relatable collection of stories and poems about menstruation. Written exclusively by women and menstruators who are Black, Indigenous, and/or of color, these coming-of-age stories range from funny to heartbreaking to powerful, yet they all reassure readers that they’re not alone in this new phase of their lives.
